Use This Current Amazon Sales Rank Chart (2023) For FBA & FBM Sourcing

A current Amazon sales rank chart is a handy tool for Amazon FBA & FBM sellers. A product’s Amazon sales rank tells us how quickly and profitably the item will sell. However, it’s essential to understand Amazon sales rank in context to make good sourcing decisions.

Misunderstanding Amazon sales rank is the number one Amazon beginner seller mistake. Potential profit can blind everyone, even seasoned sellers like me, which causes us to overlook the importance of Amazon sales rank.

In this guide, I’ll explain what is Amazon sales rank. Plus, I share the current Amazon sales rank chart I use to make smart FBA buys. Finally, I’ll introduce you to other Amazon sales rank tools that fully explain a product’s sales rank.

What Is Amazon Sales Rank?

A product’s Amazon sales rank is a number that measures how well the item sells in comparison to all the other listings in its Amazon category.

Think of sales rank as its place on Amazon’s best-seller charts.

For example, if an item’s sales rank is #134,378, 134,377 products in that category sell more volume.

What Does a Low Amazon Sales Rank Mean?

A low Amazon sales rank number means there is high sales demand for that product. A sales rank of #1 represents that the product is the number one top-selling product in its category.

For FBA and FBM sellers, the lower the Amazon sales ranking, the faster the product will likely sell. The goal is to sell products with a low Amazon sales rank and high-profit margin.

What Does a High Amazon Sales Rank Mean?

A high Amazon sales rank number means fewer sales demand exists for that item. Amazon sales rankings can be as high as #1,000,000 or more. The highest sales rank number for a category would equal the number of products in that category and indicate that it’s the least popular item.

For FBA and FBM sellers, the higher the Amazon sales ranking, the slower the product will likely sell. A product with a very high Amazon sales rank may not sell at all. Most of the time, you will want to avoid sourcing products with a high sales rank.

What Does No Amazon Sales Rank Mean?

A product with no Amazon sales rank is either brand new to Amazon or not selling at all. I personally do not sell an FBA or FBM product if it does not have an Amazon sales rank.

Does A Product’s Amazon Sales Rank Change?

Yes, Amazon sales rankings are fluid. They change throughout the day, week, month, or year depending on what’s selling on the platform. As an FBA seller, you may scan a product, and its sales rank could differ later in the day.

Amazon Sales Rank is also known as the Best Sellers Rank. You can find it in the “Product information” box on any customer-facing Amazon listing.

What Is A Good Amazon Sales Rank?

Remember, Amazon sales rank only pertains to that product’s category. There is no universal sales rank for all products on Amazon.

Therefore, whether an Amazon sales rank is “good” depends on its category. Usually, the more products there are in a category, the higher a “good” sales rank can be.

For example, a ranking of #1,000,000 is high. If that is a product’s sales rank in the Home category, it probably won’t sell. However, that same ranking in the Books category is quite good. That’s because there are more listings in the Books category than in the Home category.

Why You Should Use An Amazon Sales Rank Chart For FBA & FBM

If you are an Amazon FBA or FBM seller, you want to know whether an Amazon sales rank indicates a good or bad buy. This question is where an Amazon sales rank chart comes in handy.

An Amazon sales rank chart is a reference guide. Since sales rank interpretations differ for each category, it’s hard to remember what’s considered a good sales rank in each category.

How To Read An Amazon Sales Rank Chart

An Amazon sales rank chart lists every main Amazon product category and the highest ranking that is still considered a “good buy” in each category.

So if a product you scan has an Amazon sales rank below the number on the Amazon sales rank chart, you can feel confident that the product will sell quickly.

If you’re a new seller, I recommend staying within the Amazon sales rank chart guidelines to minimize bad buys.

Trying to sell products with high Amazon sales ranks is riskier. Experienced sellers with more revenue to risk sitting inventory may be more willing to experiment with high-ranking products, which will sometimes pay off.

For example, a very expensive product will likely have a higher rank but may have a larger profit margin.

Amazon Sales Rank Tools

To use Amazon sales rank to make retail arbitrage decisions, you must understand it in context. I use these two Amazon seller tools to help me interpret a product’s ranking beyond the Amazon sales rank chart.

Cost: free, no subscription needed

I use JungleScout a lot, especially when I was a new seller. JungleScout is an Amazon sales rank calculator that estimates how many monthly sales you can expect.

All you need to do is enter a product’s Amazon sales ranking, product category, and country to output the estimated number of sales each month.

JungleScout bases this prediction on one seller. If you’re making an FBA or FBM purchase decision, divide the number by the number of other sellers on the listing to estimate the number you can expect to sell.

If the JungleScout result is “no valid data” or “less than 5,” the product has a “bad” Amazon sales ranking.

This tool is free, but be mindful that it only allows ten rankings per day.

Keepa has many great features. One is it will tell you a product’s sales rank over time. I check the Keepa Amazon sales rank tracker for every product I sell.

If a product has a good, fairly consistent sales rank, you can feel assured that it’s a good buy.

However, if the item’s sales rank is good because it drastically dropped from its usual ranking, it is a riskier buy. The item’s sales rank likely dropped because of one recent sale and will probably go up again.

There is a free version of Keepa, but the historical sales rank chart is a Keepa paid feature.

I consider Keepa to be a must-have tool for any Amazon seller. Read my guide to Keepa for retail arbitrage to learn more about its other useful features.
